On Monday night, JR Arete QB Matthew McClelland was presented an Ed Doherty Award Medallion by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. This medallion places Matthew as a finalist Ed Doherty Award, the top honor given to AZ high school football players across all divisions. He was also a finalist last year, when hit lit up the 1A Division of AIA. Matthew’s Medallion was based on his Week Two performance vs. Glendale Prep, where he racked up 554 total yards and 7 total Touchdowns. McClelland continues to lead the 2A division in passing and total yards, and is top ten in tackles on defense. The Chargers stand at 1-3 in their return to 2A football, but losses include a 36-34 defeat to region leading San Tan Charter, and a 58-57 loss to 4-1 Glendale Prep. Next up for the Chargers is a road trip to St. Johns this Friday, with a 7pm kickoff.
