Arete Prep Sophomore QB Matthew McClelland lit up the Arete field last Friday night and earned AZ Central Athlete of the Week honors. The Chargers routed Colorado City El Capitan 64-28 on Aug. 30.
The 6-foot sophomore was 13-for-19 passing for 406 yards and four touchdowns. He added 102 yards rushing, including a 5th offensive touchdown. McClelland also had a first half interception as a defensive back. His 1st quarter big plays included a 97 yard TD pass, a 95 yard TD pass, and a 75 yard TD run.
McClelland went to the bench in the third quarter as Arete prep (1-1) held a 56-6 lead over El Capitan (1-1).
“It felt good to be in such a rhythm with my receivers,” McClelland said. “Being able to bring home a win for our first home game of the season was a great feeling for our team.”
The Chargers return to the home field tomorrow night in a huge 1A matchup with 2-0 Baboquivari. Come see the #AreteAirRaid! Kickoff is set for 7pm.
